Civil War Renanctment

Saturday, we attended a fabulous event where over 300 men participated in a Civil War Reenactment on a large battlefield. There were over 15 working canons, 25 men on horses, and lots of infantrymen with guns and bayonets. The kids loved seeing the battle and learned a lot concerning battles fought in the Civil War.

Here is some video of what we saw.

While playing with Jessie at our monthly Mom N Me at a kid  zone, I was astonished when 3 police officers brought the run-away three-year-old to me and stated, "this never happens here." Oh great, just bring on the Mom guilt. Surely my child wasn't the only toddler to escape the Kid Zone (which I thought was securely locked.)

Later I found out that a fight had broken out and a gun was used to threaten the enemy. The young adult gunmen ran out the door which happened to be VERY near where Jessie had escaped. Several police officers were immediately on the scene and rushed the High Schoolers out and arrested 6 individuals for fighting in a public setting etc.
Our Mom N Me group had NO clue as to the circumstances surrounding the incident until all the perpetrators had left (or been arrested!) It was a LARGE Play Zone, although we may have to choose another venue for our toddlers to play!

After getting his license last week, Brandon asked a good friend of his on a date. After realizing that he wished to drive her WITHOUT Mom or Dad, I went into panic mode! The night before the date, Brandon and I drove the route he would drive and even switched restaurants because of the PARKING LOT. I am "parking" challenged and worry about Brandon's ability to squeeze into tight spaces with many cars around! Am I too anxious!

All turned out well on his first date to a restaurant. I ended up driving Brandon and 2 girls to the dance, but the teenagers inform me that the date was OFFICIALLY over when I drove!

Over 250 ties were collected for Brandon's Eagle project. During the sorting process, the kids asked ME to determine if the ties were in style. (many from the 70's and 80's) I fear for the boys in the Philippines who will receive these ties as they will certainly not pass the "What Not to Wear" test. Jessie enjoyed hiding in the ties and turned out to be a very poor helper during the "work" project.

Brad installed a new ceiling fan in our kitchen yesterday. The old plastic covering protecting the lights fell loudly to the floor and shattered frightening all slumbering people at midnight. True to home improvement projects, the new fan purchased at Home Depot was damaged and needed to be returned (AFTER it was installed). The home improvement stores have a racket going, purposely damaging random merchandise to get customers to return and inevitably buy more stuff!!

Friday was a BIG day for our 16-year-old. Not only did he get his braces off, but he got his driver's license! As many boys that are 16 imagine, he was waiting for his OWN car to appear in the driveway. Disappointment reigned heavily on the household Saturday, when reality set in that he would be sharing cars for awhile and that we would enforce driving laws that many states have legally now. Unfortunately, Kansas lets teen drive with ANYONE in the car at 16! That makes me CRAZY with anxiety. Brandon is a good and safe driver, it is just all the other "cell phone" teens that get me going!
